Be Prepared for your

Hair Consultation

Professional Hair Consultations:

A professional hair consultation is a conversation between you and your stylist to create a personalized plan for your hair. During the consultation, your stylist will assess your hair's current condition, discuss your goals and lifestyle, and recommend services and maintenance routines that actually work for you. At Menagerie Style House, consultations are complimentary and typically last 15-20 minutes—we listen first, then create a plan together.

Here's what you need to know: A good consultation isn't just about what you want. It's about what your hair can realistically achieve, how much maintenance you're willing to do, and finding solutions that fit your daily routine. We're known for our honest, expert advice—not just telling you what you want to hear.

What Happens During the Initial Assessment

Your stylist begins by examining your hair's current condition, texture, and health. This assessment includes checking for damage, analyzing your natural hair color and texture, and identifying any previous chemical treatments. We look at how your hair grows, where it's thickest or thinnest, and how it responds to styling.

This step matters because your hair's starting point determines what services will work best. For example, if your hair is chemically damaged, we might recommend a keratin treatment before attempting a dramatic color change. If you have fine hair, we'll suggest techniques that add volume rather than weight.

We also discuss your hair history: What services have you had recently? What products do you use at home? Have you had any reactions to color or treatments? This information helps us avoid repeating past mistakes and build on what's worked well for you.

How We Discuss Your Hair Goals and Lifestyle

The conversation shifts to what you want to achieve. We ask specific questions: What don't you like about your current hair? How much time do you spend styling each morning? Do you heat style daily, or prefer air-drying? What's your budget for maintenance reservations?

These questions aren't small talk—they're essential for creating a realistic plan. If you want platinum blonde hair but only want to come in every six months, we'll explain why that won't work and suggest alternatives like a lived-in balayage that grows out beautifully. If you have ten minutes to get ready in the morning, we won't recommend a style that requires 45 minutes of blow-drying.

We also look at photos together. Bring inspiration pictures to your consultation—they help us understand your vision. We'll discuss what's achievable with your hair type and what adjustments might be needed. Sometimes the exact photo isn't possible, but we can create a customized version that works better for you.

Questions Your Stylist Will Ask

  • What's your daily styling routine like?
  • How often are you willing to come in for maintenance?
  • What's your budget for salon visits and products?
  • Are there any colors or styles you absolutely don't want?
  • Do you have any scalp sensitivities or allergies?
  • What's frustrated you about your hair in the past?

What Service Recommendations Look Like

Based on the assessment and conversation, your stylist recommends specific services. This isn't a sales pitch—it's expert guidance on what will actually work. We explain why we're suggesting certain techniques, what results to expect, and how long the process will take.

For color services, we discuss formulas, processing time, and whether you'll need multiple sessions to achieve your goal safely. For cuts, we explain how the style will work with your hair texture and face shape. For treatments like keratin, we outline the benefits, maintenance requirements, and how long results typically last.

We're transparent about pricing during the consultation. You'll know what to expect before we start any service. If your goal requires multiple reservations, we create a timeline and budget so there are no surprises.

Common Service Combinations We Recommend

  • Lived-in color with Kiki a precision cut for low-maintenance style
  • Keratin treatment with Jessica before major color changes to protect hair
  • Gloss / toner refresh between full color appointments to extend results with Mieke
  • Deep conditioning and bond-building treatment with every bonding service with Rosa

How We Create Your Maintenance Plan

The consultation includes planning for after you leave the salon. We discuss how often you'll need to return for touch-ups, what products to use at home, and how to maintain your results between appointments. This is where our expertise in lived-in color really shows—we specialize in styles that grow out beautifully, so you're not locked into frequent appointments.

We recommend specific products from our cruelty-free lines (Oribe and Aveda) based on your hair's needs. These aren't generic suggestions—we choose products that address your specific concerns, whether that's frizz control, color protection, or adding volume. We explain how to use each product and why it matters for your hair.

Your maintenance plan also includes booking your next reservation before you leave. This ensures you get the time slot you want and keeps your hair looking its best. For color services, we typically recommend returning every 8-12 weeks, though this varies based on the technique and your hair growth.

What Makes Consultations at Menagerie Different

We listen more than we talk. Many salons rush through consultations or push services you don't need. At Menagerie Style House, we take the time to understand what you actually want and what will work for your life. Our stylists are trained to ask the right questions and give honest answers—even if that means talking you out of a service that won't deliver the results you're hoping for.

Every consultation happens in our modern, welcoming atmosphere. You won't feel intimidated or judged. We've built our reputation on genuine relationships with guests, not just doing hair. Whether you're at our Raleigh location (2409 Crabtree Blvd #120) or our Wendell location (2210 Big Falls Dr #102), you'll experience the same expert, personalized care.

Our stylists have different specialties, so we can match you with the right expert for your needs. Some focus on lived-in color and balayage. Others specialize in precision cuts or curly hair. During your consultation, you'll work with a stylist who has specific expertise in what you're looking for.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Consultations

Do I need to book a separate consultation appointment?

Yes! We love getting to know you before you even sit in the chair. All new color guests are asked to fill out an online consultation form before their visit, and for more in-depth services, we may invite you in for a face-to-face consult first. For new haircut guests and all other services, we start off with a thorough consultation right at the start of your reservation

Should I wash my hair before the consultation?

Come with your hair in its natural state—however you typically wear it. This helps us see how your hair behaves day-to-day. If you're getting color, we'll wash your hair as part of the service anyway.

What should I bring to my consultation?

Bring inspiration photos on your phone, a list of products you currently use, and any questions you have. If you've had bad experiences at other salons, tell us—we want to avoid repeating those issues.

How much do consultations cost?

Consultations are complimentary at both our Raleigh and Wendell locations — with one exception! New guest color consultations are $25, which is applied toward your service when you book. We believe in building relationships with our guests, and that starts with understanding your needs without any pressure.

Can I get a service the same day as my consultation?

Not always. The consultation allows our team to book the correct amount of time for your service. If we can get you in the same day, we will. However, usually we book your service in the upcoming weeks

What if I don't know exactly what I want?

That's completely normal. Many guests come in knowing they want a change but aren't sure what that looks like. We'll ask questions, show you options, and help you discover what will work best for your hair and lifestyle.

What Happens After Your Consultation

Once we've created your plan, we move forward with your service or book an upcoming reservation. Every service at Menagerie Style House includes spa touches—hot towels, aromatherapy, and a hand massage. These aren't upsells; they're part of the experience. We want you to leave feeling relaxed and confident, not just with great hair.

Throughout your service, we continue the conversation. If we notice something unexpected about how your hair is responding, we adjust the plan. If you have questions while we work, we answer them. This is a collaborative process, not something done to you.

Before you leave, we review your at-home care routine one more time and book your next reservation. We also encourage you to reach out between appointments if you have questions or concerns. Our relationship with you doesn't end when you walk out the door.
